In the 13th course of our journey through “Anatomy from A to Z,” we explore the muscles of mastication.
This course includes a detailed exploration and dissection of the masseter, temporalis, stylopharyngeus, and the lateral and medial pterygoids. This course also explores in detail the tongue, the soft tissues of the palate, the tonsils, and the structure of the pharynx. In addition, you will also see key cranial nerves and the common carotid artery in situ.
Through this experience, participants will gain a rich and deep understanding of the continuities, connections, and relationships between these named muscles and their surrounding tissues, including bony landmarks, fasciae, and visceral elements. Structures will also be compared ex-situ to provide an appreciation for the diversity and range of anatomical expression. Through cultivating a greater appreciation of the human form, participants will be better able to apply their anatomical knowledge to their bodywork and movement practices.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Describe and detail the relationships, continuities, and connections for the named structures in this course (masseter, temporalis, stylopharyngeus, and the lateral and medial pterygoids. This course also explores in detail the tongue, the soft tissues of the palate and the structure of the pharynx) to its surrounding structure (bony landmarks, other muscles, fascia, and vessels),
- Describe the pathways of the cranial nerves V, X, and XII in relation to these structures,
- Identify the relationship of the tonsils and tongue to the surrounding structures,
- Describe the variations that you have observed between Anna and Z and consider how these variations may have influenced movement, expression, and function.
