In the 16th course of our journey “Anatomy from A to Z,” we explore the thoracic viscera.
This course includes a detailed exploration and dissection of the thoracic space, including the visceral membranes, mediastinum, ribs, lungs, heart, thymus, brachial plexus, esophagus, and trachea. Muscular explorations will include longus capitis, longus colli, rectus capitis lateralis, and rectus capitis anterior. Participants will first meet these structures in-situ and gain a greater appreciation of their contexts and relationships. The heart, lungs, bronchial trees, esophagus and trachea will also be observed and compared ex-situ in order to appreciate their structures. A thorough exploration of the heart center will serve to illuminate its key structures, such as its coronary arteries, atria, ventricles, chordae tendineae, valves, and relationships to the pulmonary trunk, vena cava and aorta. Through this experience, participants will gain a rich and deep understanding of the continuities, connections, and relationships between these viscera and their surrounding tissues, including bony landmarks, fasciae, and muscular elements. Structures will also be compared ex-situ to provide an appreciation for the diversity and range of anatomical expression. Through cultivating a greater appreciation of the human form, participants will be better able to apply their anatomical knowledge to their bodywork and movement practices.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Describe and detail the relationships, continuities, and connections for each of the named structures in this course (esophagus, trachea, heart, thymus, lungs, visceral membranes, rectus capitis anterior and rectus capititis lateralis) to its surrounding structure (bony landmarks, other muscles, fascia, viscera, and vessels),
- Describe the structure of the thoracic space, including the relationship of the thoracic organs to the great vessels,
- Describe the structure of the heart, and accurately describe the journey that blood makes through its atria, ventricles, and valves,
- Describe how one’s appreciation for the structure and support of the thoracic space has evolved through this course,
- Describe the variations observed between Anna and Z and consider how these variations may have influenced movement, expression, and function.
