In the 17th course of our journey “Anatomy from A to Z,” we explore the textural layer of deep muscle tissues that supports the spine. 

This course includes a detailed exploration and dissection of the muscle tissues of the iliacus, psoas, quadratus lumborum, diaphragm and intertransversarii. Participants will also meet some retroperitoneal structures (inferior vena cava, kidney ureter, and ovarian vein) as well as the pericardial membranes and lumbar plexus. Through this experience, participants will gain a rich and deep understanding of the continuities, connections, and relationships between these named muscles and their surrounding tissues, including bony landmarks, fasciae, and visceral elements. Structures will also be compared ex-situ to provide an appreciation for the diversity and range of anatomical expression. Through cultivating a greater appreciation of the human form, participants will be better able to apply their anatomical knowledge to their bodywork and movement practices.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Describe and detail the relationships, continuities, and connections for each of the named structures in this course (iliacus, psoas, quadratus lumborum, diaphragm and intertransversarii lumborum) to its surrounding structure (bony landmarks, other muscles, fascia, and vessels),
  • Describe the relationships between the diaphragm and the pericardial membranes, 
  • a vertebrae, describe how the erector spinae group and deep spinal intrinsics may connect to its various bony prominences,
  • Describe the relationship between the psoas and the nerves of the lumbar plexus, 
  • Describe how one’s appreciation for the structure and support of the deep muscle layer of the abdomen has evolved through this course,
  • Describe the variations observed between Anna and Z and consider how these variations may have influenced movement, expression, and function.
