In the 20th - and final - course of our journey “Anatomy from A to Z,” we explore the cranium and the skull.
This course includes a detailed exploration and dissection of the landmarks of the cranium, survey of cranial nerves, and overview of key structures of the brain. Structures identified include the cranial landmarks and sutures, meninges, cranial nerves, pineal and pituitary gland, optic chiasma, optometric points, sinuses, tentorium cerebelli, cerebellum, cerebrum, mammillary bodies, cerebral arteries, fornix, hippocampus, thalamus, amygdala, substantia nigra, red nucleus, cerebral peduncles and pons. Participants will first meet these structures in-situ and gain a greater appreciation of their contexts and relationships, then explore the brain ex-situ. Through this experience, participants will gain a detailed understanding of this most remarkable organ. Through cultivating a greater appreciation of the human form, participants will be better able to apply their anatomical knowledge to their bodywork and movement practices.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Describe and detail the relationships of the brain, brain stem, foramen magnum, and spinal cord,
- Identify key cranial landmarks and sutures,
- Describe the relationships of the meninges and dura,
- Identify the following structures: cranial nerves, pineal and pituitary gland, optic chiasma, optometric points, sinuses, tentorium cerebelli, cerebellum, cerebrum, mammillary bodies, cerebral arteries, fornix, hippocampus, thalamus, amygdala, substantia nigra, red nucleus, cerebral peduncles and pons.
- Describe how one’s appreciation for the structure and support of the cranium and brain has evolved through this course,
- Describe the variations observed between Anna and Z and consider how these variations may have influenced movement, expression, and function.
