Dissection Series: Margaret (10 HR/CE)
Access OptionsIn this course, our teacher and donor form is Margaret: a female, unfixed form. Through these sessions - captured in HD over the course of a six day journey in May 2020, we explore in detail through the textured layers of the body: skin, superficial fascia, deep fascia, perifascia, abdominal viscera, and thoracic viscera. Some of the special features of this donor form include an extended exploration of the superficial fascia, a tour of the heart and thoracic space (including the diaphragm), a tour of the kidneys and investigation of a knee replacement.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Students will be able to describe appropriate lab safety protocols, what to expect in a laboratory environment, donor program requirements, attitudes for successful completion of the course, the difference between a fixed and unfixed form, and credentials of faculty.
- Students will be able to describe the properties of skin, including thickness, relationships, and detail the four steps in Integral Anatomy for dissection.
- Students will be able to describe the properties of superficial fascia, such as its texture, endocrine and lymphatic function, as well as its variability of its thickness, relationships to surrounding tissues, and capacity for movement.Â
- Students will be able to describe the properties of perifascia and deep fascia as well as their role in supporting movement.Â
- Students will be able to describe the properties of muscle tissue and its relationships to structures around it.Â
- Students will be able to describe the relative position of the heart in the thoracic cavity and to detail its functional relationship to the structures around it, both membranous and serous.
- Students will describe and appreciate the role of fatty tissue in protecting both visceral and nervous structures.Â
- Students will be able to describe the position of retroperitoneal structures.
- Students will be able to describe the relative position of the diaphragm to the psoas and transversus abdominis and detail its normal perforations.
- Students will be able to describe general positioning and relationship of the abdominal organs to each other, including functional relationships as well as dysfunctional presentations (adhesions, gallstones).
