Anatomy from A to Z: Course 9 (9.5 HR/CE)

Muscle Layer - Hip: Pars Intima, Adductor Group, Deep Six Lateral Rotators

Access Options

Course Description

In the ninth course of our journey through “Anatomy from A to Z,” we begin to explore the pars intima, the adductor group, the deep six lateral rotators, and the sacrotuberous ligament.

This course includes a detailed exploration and dissection of the pars intima, aka “the genitals,” and details the continuities and relationships of these structures in their varied presentations. This course also includes the deep muscles of the hips, including most of the adductors (magnus, longus, brevis, gracilis, and pectineus) as well as the deep six lateral rotators (obturators internus and externus, gemellus superior and inferior, piriformis, and quadratus femoris).

Through this experience, participants will gain a rich and deep understanding of the continuities, connections, and relationships between these named muscles and their surrounding tissues, including bony landmarks, fasciae, and visceral elements, including the sciatic and femoral nerve. Structures will also be compared ex-situ to provide an appreciation for the diversity and range of anatomical expression. Through cultivating a greater appreciation of the human form, participants will be better able to apply their anatomical knowledge to their bodywork and movement practices.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Describe and detail the relationships, continuities, and connections for each of the named structures in this course to its surrounding structure (bony landmarks, other muscles, fascia, and vessels),
  • Identify the key structures of the male and female pars intima,
  • Describe the relationship of the gemellus and obturators to their to their common tendon,
  • Describe the connections and continuities that the deep six muscles have to the greater trochanter,
  • Describe the variations that you have observed between Anna and Z and consider how these variations may have influenced movement, expression, and function.
