Muscle Layer: Hamstrings, Calf, Plantar Foot

Access Options

Course Description

In the seventh course of our journey through “Anatomy from A to Z,” we further explore the textural layer of muscle tissues of the posterior thigh and leg.

This course includes a detailed exploration and dissection of muscle tissues of the hamstrings, calf, and plantar foot, including the hamstrings, gastrocnemius, soleus plantaris, abductor hallucis, flexor hallucis brevis and flexor hallucis longus, flexor digitorum brevis and flexor digitorum longus, abductor digiti minimi, quadratus plantae, the lumbricals, and tibialis posterior. Through this experience, participants will gain a rich and deep understanding of the continuities, connections, and relationships between these named muscle tissues and their surrounding tissues, including bony landmarks, fasciae, and visceral elements such as the tibial nerve, lateral plantar nerve, the popliteal space, arteries, and veins.  Structures will also be compared ex-situ to provide an appreciation for the diversity and range of anatomical expression. Through cultivating a greater appreciation of the human form, participants will be better able to apply their anatomical knowledge to their bodywork and movement practices.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Describe and detail the relationships, continuities, and connections for each of the named structures in this course to its surrounding structures, including the hamstrings, popliteus, gastrocnemius, soleus plantaris, abductor hallucis, flexor hallucis brevis and flexor hallucis longus, flexor digitorum brevis and flexor digitorum longus, abductor digiti minimi, quadratus plantae, the lumbricals, and tibialis posterior.
  • Describe the path of the tibial nerve, plantar nerve, and visceral components of the popliteal space,
  • Describe the variations observed between Anna and Z and consider how these variations may have influenced movement, expression, and function.
