Anatomy from A to Z: Course 8 (10 HR/CE)
Muscle Layer: Anterior Leg ~ Compartments Lower Leg, Dorsum of Foot, Quadriceps
Access OptionsCourse Description
In the eighth course of our journey through “Anatomy from A to Z,” we further explore the textural layer of muscle tissues of the anterior thigh and leg.
This course includes a detailed exploration and dissection of muscle tissues of the tibialis anterior, extensor digitorum longus, extensor hallucis longus, fibularis tertius, extensor digitorum longus and extensor hallucis longus, fibularis longus and brevis, extensor hallucis brevis and extensor digitorum brevis, popliteus, articular genus and the four quadriceps. Through this experience, participants will gain a rich and deep understanding of the continuities, connections, and relationships between these named muscles and their surrounding tissues, including bony landmarks, fasciae, and visceral elements such as the interosseous membrane, the neurovascular bundle of the tibial nerve, the superficial and deep branches of the common fibular nerve, and related thigh and leg vasculature. Structures will also be compared ex-situ to provide an appreciation for the diversity and range of anatomical expression. Through cultivating a greater appreciation of the human form, participants will be better able to apply their anatomical knowledge to their bodywork and movement practices.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Describe and detail the relationships, continuities, and connections for each of the named structures in this course to its surrounding structures, including the ttibialis anterior, extensor digitorum longus, extensor hallucis longus, fibularis tertius, extensor digitorum longus and extensor hallucis longus, fibularis longus and brevis, extensor hallucis brevis and extensor digitorum brevis, popliteus, articular genus and the four quadriceps.
- Describe the path of the tibial nerve, plantar nerve, and major visceral components of the thigh and leg,
- Describe the variations observed between Anna and Z and consider how these variations may have influenced movement, expression, and function.
