Course Description

In the third course of our journey through “Anatomy from A to Z,” we begin to explore the textural layer of muscle tissue in its more superficial aspects around the shoulder and chest.

This course includes a detailed exploration and dissection of the superficial muscles of the chest and shoulder, including the pectoralis major, deltoid, trapezius, and latissimus dorsi. Through this experience, participants will gain a rich and deep understanding of the continuities, connections, and relationships between these named muscles and surrounding tissues, including bony landmarks, fasciae, and visceral elements. Structures will also be compared ex-situ to provide an appreciation for the diversity and range of anatomical expression. Through cultivating a greater appreciation of the human form, participants will be better able to apply their anatomical knowledge to their bodywork and movement practices.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Describe why integral anatomy considers the muscle textural layer first as a whole body layer rather than starts with individual named muscles,
  • Describe the difference between anatomical and functional units,
  • Describe and detail the relationships, continuities, and connections for each of the named structures in this course to its surrounding structure (bony landmarks, other muscles, fascia, and vessels),
  • Describe how adipose often acts as a cushioning layer for a muscle’s viscera (nerve and vessels),
  • Describe the role in perifascia in generating differential movement between muscle and its surrounding tissues and viscera,
  • Describe the variations that you have observed between Anna and Z and consider how these variations may have influenced movement, expression, and function

Keywords
