Course Description
In the sixth course of our journey through “Anatomy from A to Z,” we further explore the textural layer of muscle tissues around the shoulder and neck.
This course includes a detailed exploration and dissection of muscle tissues of the shoulder, neck, and scapula, including the sternocleidomastoid, pectoralis minor, coracobrachialis, biceps brachii, serratus posterior and inferior, teres major, serratus anterior, rhomboids, levator scapulae and the rotator cuff. Through this experience, participants will gain a rich and deep understanding of the continuities, connections, and relationships between these named muscles and their surrounding tissues, including bony landmarks, fasciae, and visceral elements. Structures will also be compared ex-situ to provide an appreciation for the diversity and range of anatomical expression. Through cultivating a greater appreciation of the human form, participants will be better able to apply their anatomical knowledge to their bodywork and movement practices.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Describe and detail the relationships, continuities, and connections for each of the named structures in this course to its surrounding structure (bony landmarks, other muscles, fascia, and vessels),
- Name the three muscles that attach to the coracoid process,
- Identify the four muscles of the rotator cuff and describe their attachments and variations,
- Describe how and why the serratus anterior and rhomboids could be considered one scapular muscle,
- Describe the relationship of levator scapulae to the cervical spine, scalenes, and scapulae,
- Describe the variations observed between Anna and Z and consider how these variations may have influenced movement, expression, and function.
