Anatomy from A to Z: Course 4 (9.5 HR/CE)
Muscle Layer: The Gluteals, Tensor Fasciae Latae, Sartorius, Gracilis
Access OptionsCourse Description
In the fourth course of our journey through “Anatomy from A to Z,” we begin to explore the textural layer of muscle tissues around the hip.
This course includes a detailed exploration and dissection of the muscle tissues of the hips, including the gluteals, tensor fasciae latae, sartorius, and gracilis. Through this experience, participants will gain a rich and deep understanding of the continuities, connections, and relationships between these named muscles and the tissues that surround them, including bony landmarks, fasciae, and visceral elements, including the sciatic and femoral nerve. Structures will also be compared ex-situ to provide an appreciation for the diversity and range of anatomical expression. Through cultivating a greater appreciation of the human form, participants will be better able to apply their anatomical knowledge to their bodywork and movement practices.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Describe and detail the relationships, continuities, and connections for each of the named structures in this course to its surrounding structure (bony landmarks, other muscles, fascia, and vessels),
- Identify the neurovascular bundles that innervate the gluteals,
- Describe the relationship between the tensor fascia latae, glutes, and the iliotibial band and describe their role in stabilizing this structure,
- Given the structure of the iliotibial band, describe how massage or other bodywork techniques could be optimally used to safely address dysfunction in this structure,
- Identify the muscles that form the femoral triangle,
- Describe the relationship often found between vascular and loose fatty tissue,
- Describe the variations that you have observed between Anna and Z and consider how these variations may have influenced movement, expression, and function.
