Course Description

In the 15th course of our journey through “Anatomy from A to Z,” we explore the retroperitonealand pelvic viscera.

This course includes a detailed exploration and dissection of the visceral membranes and fascia (peritoneum, extraperitoneal fat, transversalis fascia, lymphatics, cisterna chyli) well as visceral structures such as the kidney ureter, ovarian vein, kidneys, adrenals, bladder, urethral sponge, clitoris, penis, uterus, ovaries, prostate and testicles. This course also explores related vasculature, nerves, and musculature such as the inferior vena cava, psoas major and minor, and lymphatics. Viscera are explored both in-situ for context as well as ex-situ for detail and comparison.

Through this experience, participants will gain a rich and deep understanding of the continuities, connections, and relationships between these named structures and their surrounding tissues, including bony landmarks, fasciae, and visceral elements. Structures will also be compared ex-situ to provide an appreciation for the diversity and range of anatomical expression. Through cultivating a greater appreciation of the human form, participants will be better able to apply their anatomical knowledge to their bodywork and movement practices.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Describe and detail the relationships, continuities, and connections for the named structures in this course: visceral membranes and fascia (peritoneum, extraperitoneal fat, transversalis fascia, lymphatics, cisterna chyli) well as visceral structures such as the kidney ureter, ovarian vein, kidneys, adrenals, bladder, urethral sponge, clitoris, penis, uterus, ovaries, prostate and testicles.
  • Describe the relationship of vasculature, nerves, and musculature such as the inferior vena cava, psoas major and minor, and lymphatics to surrounding tissues.
  • Describe the pathways of the enteric nervous system,
  • Describe how visceral adhesions may develop and conjecture on their possible implications for health,
  • Describe the variations that you have observed between Anna and Z and consider how these variations may have influenced movement, expression, and function.
